Audit · Interference · Stroop · Item 19

A Stroop test, two passes. First the labels agree with the ink. Then they betray it.

A colour word lights the terminal, printed in coloured ink. Your instruction never changes: name the ink, never the word. The first pass is clean — word and ink agree, and you are fast. The second pass is the decoy — the label says one colour, the ink says another, and the printed word fights you for the answer. The protocol files the exact millisecond cost of that fight. Free, in the browser, no sign-up.

No download. No account. Eighteen trials across two passes. The decoy's cost is filed to the millisecond.

Frequently filed questions

Is this Stroop test free?

Yes. Free, browser-playable, no sign-up, no download. Nothing is filed off this page unless you choose to continue into the game.

What is the Stroop test and the Stroop effect?

The Stroop test is a classic interference task. A colour word is printed in an ink that may not match it, and you name the ink, not the word. Reading is automatic, so when the word and the ink disagree the two answers collide and your response slows — that slowdown is the Stroop effect, first described by John Ridley Stroop in 1935. This page measures it directly: a clean pass where word and ink agree, then a decoy pass where they fight, and the cost is the difference between the two.

How is the interference cost measured?

You run two passes. In the clean pass the word and the ink agree, so reading and naming point at the same answer — this is your baseline speed. In the decoy pass they conflict. The interference cost is how much slower your average correct response is in the decoy pass than in the clean pass, reported in milliseconds. A small cost means you override the printed word fast; a large one means the label spoke first.

Is this a real cognitive or medical assessment?

No. It is a game. The rating is a game score for entertainment — it does not measure intelligence, diagnose anything, or stand in for any professional assessment.
