Audit · Interference · Flanker · Item 20

A flanker test, two passes. First the crowd agrees with the centre. Then it turns on it.

Five arrows light the terminal. Your instruction never changes: call the direction of the centre one, ignore the four beside it. The first pass is clean — every arrow points the same way, and you are fast. The second pass is the decoy — the flankers point against the centre and fight you for the answer. The protocol files the exact millisecond cost of that fight. Free, in the browser, no sign-up.

No download. No account. Eighteen trials across two passes. The decoy's cost is filed to the millisecond.

Tap the direction of the centre arrow — the one above the marker — not the crowd around it. The feed does not wait; a window left empty is a miss.

Frequently filed questions

Is this flanker test free?

Yes. Free, browser-playable, no sign-up, no download. Nothing is filed off this page unless you choose to continue into the game.

What is the flanker test (Eriksen flanker task)?

The flanker test is a classic selective-attention task introduced by Barbara and Charles Eriksen in 1974. A target sits in the centre of a row — here, an arrow — flanked on both sides by distractors. Your job is to respond to the centre target and ignore the flankers. When the flankers point the same way as the centre (congruent) you are fast; when they point the other way (incongruent) they compete for your response and you slow down. That slowdown is the flanker effect, and this page measures it directly: a clean congruent pass, then a decoy incongruent pass, and the cost is the difference between the two.

How is the interference cost measured?

You run two passes. In the congruent pass every arrow points the same way, so the flankers reinforce the centre — this is your baseline speed. In the incongruent pass the flankers point against the centre and pull at your answer. The interference cost is how much slower your average correct response is in the incongruent pass than in the congruent pass, reported in milliseconds. A small cost means you locked onto the centre and filtered the rest fast; a large one means the crowd voted first.

Is this a real cognitive or medical assessment?

No. It is a game. The rating is a game score for entertainment — it does not measure intelligence, diagnose anything, or stand in for any professional assessment.
